Ms Frida Kühl presenting the results of KEYSTONE’s Stakeholders Survey at the STA Annual Conference & Innovation Awards
The KEYSTONE web application interphases
For one more year, KEYSTONE was presented at the 2025 STA Annual Conference & Innovation Awards, which this year was held under the umbrella of the European Transport Conference in Antwerp, Belgium, on 17 September 2025. This 10th anniversary edition was themed “Safer & Greener Transport Infrastructures in the Context of AI & Big Data Developments”, focusing on how the latest technological developments in AI and Big Data can reshape the future of transport infrastructures. Organised by the Smart Transportation Alliance (STA), the event brought together leading experts, from European Commission representatives to industry leaders, who had the opportunity to hear more about this EU-funded initiative.
Ms Frida Kühl, STA Programmes Coordinator, presented the results of KEYSTONE’s stakeholder consultation carried out during the first year of the project, highlighting the main challenges and barriers in cross-border logistics compliance. These included the lack of adequate IT tools, legal restrictions, the need for real-time updates, and the requirement for harmonised, standardised systems and secure data-sharing frameworks.
With just nine months remaining before the project concludes, KEYSTONE has now entered its pilot phase, which will test in practice the web application that is being developed within the project:
Road Transport Pilot by Gruber Logistics, from Northern Italy to the Port of La Spezia
Intermodal Transport Pilot (Road + Rail) by CIM Interporto di Novara, from Rotterdam Terminal to CIM Interporto di Novara
A key highlight was the demonstration of the KEYSTONE web app interfaces for three different user profiles: enforcement authorities, logistics operators, and drivers. The demo showed the current status and data available, including inspection alerts, traffic flow, notifications, and other real-time information.
All attendees were invited to join the KEYSTONE stakeholder community and become members. The presentation sparked active discussion about ongoing challenges in cross-country logistics compliance. Ms Isabelle Vandoorne, Acting Head of Unit for Innovation and Research at DG MOVE, European Commission, acknowledged that the current system still does not fully facilitate data exchange, underlining the relevance of KEYSTONE and EU-funded initiatives.
